Sony 16:9 and iMovie

Hi All!

I've got a Sony MiniDV and before I upgraded to iMovie3, I was able to 
import clips shot in the 16:9 aspect ratio. Now, everything gets converted 
to fit the screen and I lose the panoramic quality of my shots. Does anybody 
know how I could restore to the original format, and save it so it can be 
seen on a DVD in 16:9 on a TV?

Any kind of response would be appreciated, more info the better!
