Blair Witch was specifically appropriate to Hi-8 hand held. It was  
supposed to look crappy and cheap and homemade...

So if your story lends itself to that because it all takes place in a  
seven eleven and is captured by a security cam... But otherwise do  
yourself a favor and rent a good camera.
