Because the standards aren't perfect?  Because of software bugs (as you 
saw on win 98)?   Because your software isn't fully up to date?

You'll need to do a bit of leg work to resolve this:
1.  do a google search and see what others have experienced
2.  search the Apple support database
3.  file a bug with Apple and be prepared to send in a copy of the 
balky disk.

By the way, Dell had particularly poor support for making videos for a 
long long while.  They were selling the extra software to do this, and 
it flat out didn't work.  Maybe the Dell system is part of your 
problem.  Not sure if Dell has solved those issues yet.
