Transfer VHS to DVD in one pass?

I hope I have finished gathering and am ready to start on my project. I 
have a eMac G4 10.2.8 with a superdrive, 200GB external firewire drive, 
Canon ZR70 mini DV camcorder, Toast 6, ILife 4 and a new VCR player. 
What is the best procedure to use to make DVD's? I am learning Mac OS X 
but have been with Apple since 1980. My biggest decision then was 
whether to get a 16K or 32K Apple ll.
  I guess I am confused on where to download the VCR images, to mini DV, 
iMovie, or iDVD?
Any input will be appreciated.   Thank you,    Nick
