[MacDV] Mini Disk Recorders

My big Minidisc Player has Optical Digital Input and Output, what is 
to stop me from plugging it into a Mac with Optical inputs?

Having asked that, I'd just like to add that I think Minidisc is a 
terrible device for audio work, as it uses compression.
