Once again I was on vacation so I am catching up on this list.

You should note that the Handy Cam will not show up as a drive when
attached via firewire like it does when connected via USB. Open iMovie,
plug in the camcorder, turn the camcorder to VCR mode and you should get
a message in iMovie saying something like Camera Connected. Use the
iMovie controls to then inport the video.
