Don't use S-Video - that is an Analog Video signal.
Use the iLink or FireWire cable that you have. That is a digital signal.
Just plug the larger end (6-pin) into your Powerbook and the smaller 
end (4-pin) into your video camera. Turn your Camera on. Then run 
your FCE. Nothing to it.

Your Camcorder is Digital, Firewire transfer is digital, and your 
PowerBook is digital.
Keep you video signal the best it can be. Use the digital FW cable.
