I've heard good things about the Griffen iMic usb adapter.  You are 
limited to 16bit, 44.1kHz sound.  I prefer my Audiophile 2496 PCI sound 
card, though the purists insist on using stand-alone box for esoteric 
and engineering reasons.  These cards aren't even top of the line w/ 
regards to the sampling rate/bit depth, either - and they still run 
close to $150!
