Amen to that!  I was just about to write something about it and ran 
across your post.

As you're aware, the easy way to do it in most e-mail clients is to 
highlight the section you want to appear in the reply BEFORE you click 
the "Reply" button.

Just that text will show up in the reply message.

That keeps the individual post short, and makes us digest-style readers 
not have to wear our our fingers scrolling to the bottom of 23 replies 
we've already read.
