Plenty of people have had audio sync problems with Canon camcorders, 
including with the prosumer models, such as the XL-1, using 16-bit sound. 
I have had intermittent problems with loss of audio sync on all the Canon 
camcorders that we have owned.  I use 16-bit sound exclusively.

If you search the archives of this forum, or most other video forums, you 
can find many references to Canon's audio sync problems.
