You need about 10 gigs of free space on your boot drive.

Have you tried to make a disk image of the DVD and then burn the image?

Open up the Disk Utility and with the DVD mounted, under Images choose New
Image>From Device, then save it on your big external HD. You should be able
to burn the image without any trouble.
