As another (confusing) data point:

I have two G4 machines, one at work and one at home. Both are on
personal-sized APC UPS units; the work machine has been on 24/7 for 2
years while the home machine is only on during weekends and is turned on
and off several times a day. Neither machine has had any problems
whatsoever.
