[MacDV] Will DVD SP 3 burn dual layer disk externally?

I am running DVD Studio Pro 3 under OS X.3.9, QuickTime 6.5.2. I would
like to upgrade, but we are in the middle of a project, and everyone warns
against changes in mid-project. We own Tiger and DVD SP 4, sitting in
their boxes.

The current project is just under 6 GB. We bought an external FireWire
dual layer DVD burner, with a Pioneer DVR-110D mechanism. We thought this
would let us burn the project to a dual-layer DVD+R disc.

After choosing dual-layer in the appropriate places (we think) in DVD SP 3,
we tried to burn the disc. We discovered that only the internal drive (a
Pioneer DVR 107D) was accessible/selectable. Toast can see the drive, but
DVD SP 3 can't or won't.

Next, we tried creating a disc image with DVD SP 3, and were successful in
creating a .img file. We tried to burn this to the external DVD burner
using Toast. Toast started the job, but aborted when it reported errors. I
tried to burn the image using Disk Utility, and it, too, wouldn't recognize
the external DVD drive.

Can anyone give me any guidance on this problem?

thanks,
Derek
