What I recommend is get Divx Doctor II and drop the AVI file on that. 
It becomes a .MOV file. Edit that file in Final Cut or maybe iMovie 
and you're set to go. After completing the video, run it through 
Compressor (and then to DVD Studio Pro) or Toast for finalization.
