Weird Error on 17" - Disk Utility Repair

Using my 17" PB and 10.2.5, I get a strange Disk Utility refusal to
repair my hard disk/s. Anyone know what this is? I have NEVER seen
this on prior PB or on
any desktop, so I wonder why it appeared now.

///
Repairing disk "Backup Disk".
Can't open /dev/rdisk0s10: Permission denied
Repair completed.
///

On the 17" Powerbook, with two partitions, same error on both. OS
10.2.5 (but same error on 10.2.x before). One disk named MAIN and the
other named BACKUP

I've tried EVERYTHING I can think of:
Did SAFE BOOT of both disks.
Reparied disk permissions on both disks (booting separately from each).
Tried doing Disk Repair from each to the other, booting alternately
from each.
Tried searcing for what appears to be a file - /dev/rdisk0s10 but can't
find it.

ALSO I did the fsck -y thing from the Terminal (booting with command-S
into
single user mode first) and fsck found all OK with both disks!!!

(When doing the Disk Utility repair thing I am always doing it from one
disk
to the other - so it should work - and has worked before.)

What can I do?
