I read this somewhere but havent' tried it (and hopefully it wasn't in a dreamI): Boot into OS9, and using the Keyboard Control Panel you can reverse the operation of the F keys. (Now you need to hold "fn" along with the brightness keys, etc, and the F keys alone will work as you're wanting.) Boot back into OSX and the F keys will function same as in OS9. Let us know if it works....
