ColorSync problem

Am video editing for streaming on TiBook500 with FinalCutPro, encoding
for crossplatform with Cleaner/QT and/or Squeeze.
Discovered the gamma "can of worms!" problem requiring tightrope
walking-like adjustments(!?) to make files acceptable on Mac AND Pc.
Started by looking into Colorsync and display calibration but was
cut short by some sudden kind of crash when attempting to load
a profile. ColorSync box turned into black and white stripes and
stopped working, of course.

Cold reboots got me to the main OsX 10.1.5 screen and no further,
no icons, no dock, no nothing. Booting in 9.2.2 fully succesful.

Question: Is there a ColorSync preference file which can get corrupted,
where exactly is it and can one trash it? Am trying to avoid
re-installation of OsX.

Tricky stuff, gamma!
