To all who think this is a April Fools Joke. it isn't, this rumor has
been out there for weeks. I heard about it on another list a while
back. Also, OSX would not run on just any p4, xeon, itanium, or athlon
chip. The new itanium would be optimized and tweaked so that only that
chip would run osx. I am not sure they would pass up on the 970, which
is based on the power4 core, for a few reaons: 1. Heat, the 970 runs
MUCH MUCH cooler than any intel chip could dream of. 2. Cost, the new
itanium is between 3 and 4 thousand dollars apiece. 3. 64 AND 32 bit
native processing. the itanium sacrifices a small amount of speed on
32 bit programs. 4. the 970 can be used in not only dual processor
arrangments but also quad, and if you want to get ridiculous, even more
multiples of 2. How cool would it be to one day have a way to just buy
another processor instead of always just buying ram? 5. The 970 can
handle 4 gigs of physical RAM.
If apple passes on this chip then apple will surely have a good reason,
and at this point i dont think that the itanium is the way to go.
