A couple months ago I got a $50 rebate when buying one from the local Apple
Store, so shop around.

I'm not sure that it's overkill - I bought it for a similar reason.  Digital
video takes a lot of processing horsepower.

And it's not not really plug and play either.  The video source has to be
clean; it doesn't like the sync flutter from dirty old VHS tapes.  Also, be
sure and quit all other applications while you're importing video.  This is
necessary to keep it from choking, at least on my 800 MHz DVI powerbook G4.
