Conflicting advice on li-ion batteries

Heya all,

I'm the recent proud owner of a 15" 1GHz TiBook and have been confused 
by the conflicting advice on when to recharge the battery.

A battery guide on the web says lithium ion batteries prefer shallow 
discharges before recharge, however the instruction manual that came 
with the TiBook says that after the initial full charge/discharge it 
can be plugged into the power anytime you like. Apple then contradicts 
itself in its online KnowledgeBase, which recommends exhausting the 
battery before each charge.

So which is right?
