The Disc Utility (in your Applications folder>Utilities>FirstAid  can do everything from verify to repairing discs (drives), repair files, erase discs, partition a drive.

And I must add that Disk Warrior has recently saved one of my 160 GB drives when Disk Utility would recognize it, say it fixed it, but continue to report a problem, all the while not allowing the drive to mount.
