No, Dave, but it can 'look' that way, at times.

DVD SP is compatible, last I heard, with external drives. For a while 
I thought Apple disabled the external drive thing with Final Cut Pro 
buyers being numerous, in order to 'move them' up to DVD SP... but 
who knows?
