[OT] New 20" LCD display _requires_ OS X ???

I'm trying to help a local non-profit who want to put one of the new 
Apple 20" LCD displays on one of their aging G4 Macs. The dealer has 
told them that OS X is _required_ with this new display. Is this 
really true ? Will it absolutely not work with a Mac running OS 9.2, 
or will it just be lacking certain functionality ? And why would 
Apple do this ?
