But what about those specs for the Matshita UJ-815 from the CEATEC Japan
2002 Technology trade show
CD-R write 16x
CD-RW write 4x
CD-ROM read 24x
DVD-R write 2x
DVD-RW write 1x
DVD-RAM write 2x
DVD-ROM read 8x
which are the same for the tray-load model (UJ-810)
Firmware limitation doesn't mean no support for blank -rw media.

no, there is no firmware update. I had long, multiple discussions with
tech support and finally got a direct answer from engineering that the
uj-815 does not support blank -rw media.
