OK, now we are getting somewhere. So Luke and I had both assumed that the street was the same length, but according to this, the 5400RPM drive has 1.5 miles to travel (ref: Luke's post).

So for two drives of the same capacity, one at 5400RPM and 3 platters, and the other 4200RPM and two platters, the 4200PM Drive is

         4200
         ----
          2
     ------------ = 1.167 times as fast.
         5400
         ----
          3

Does anyone know what make and model of 60GB drive Apple is putting in the AlBooks? The specs don't match what I can find for IBM/Hatachi Travelstar drives.

BTW, the data sheet for the Travelstar model 60GH says it has 4 "Disks". If the 4200RPM drive really only has 2, then it may be 1.56 times faster than the 60GH.
