On Shawn's recommendation, I bought one of these cloths and tried it on my 800 MHz powerbook. Result: Yes, I was able to buff out all the marks from the keyboard, but I was not able to buff out the trackpad outline. The trackpad outline is even visible when the screen is lit. My conclusion is that they are indentations, but they can be buffed out as long as they are not too deep and sharp. The trackpad leaves deeper and sharper indentations, since it is a much sharper edge than the key corners. Anyhow, thanks Shawn I needed a new cover anyhow.
