mouse/mice setup

I have been trying to use my microsoft optical intellimouse inside  
Appleworks 6.
There's a things I would like to set it up for (using the intellimouse 
panel) but I can't seem to do it.
I have had success setting up other programs in the control panel

Any suggestions on the following would be appreciated as it concerns 
Appleworks.

1. Scrolling won't work when I use the scroll wheel.  I have attempted 
several times to set up
Apple works with its own special feature using the microsoft control  
panel, but no go.
2. I can seem to get the right button on the mouse to set up for copy 
paste functions.
Again I have tried to use the control panel but it just doesn't take.

Anyone know if its possible and if so how do I go about it.
