Burning DVDs Through VIAO

I would like to backup my data on DVDs. I currently do not have a DVD burner
on my Tibook G4 867. However, I have a friend of mine that has a DVD Burner
on his Sony VIAO laptop. Is there a way where I can use the DVD burner on
his laptop as an external DVD burner. In other words, do I have to transfer
all my data to his laptop and then burn them. Some files do get corrupted
when transferring them to Windowz.

P.S. The VIAO does have a FireWire outlet.
