TiBook won't shut up

I'm unsure whether this is a TiBook question or a general Panther question,
but ever since this morning my TiBook beeps when I hit *any* key (except,
oddly, the Enter key and the F-keys).

I've tried everything I can think of, from trashing prefs to zapping PRAM to
running fsck to finally reinstalling the OS...and finally just had to mute
the sound to avoid listening to the constant "boop boop boop boop boop"
while typing anything.

Has anyone seen this? I must be missing something fairly obvious.
