Capture DV to external drive

I asked last week if anyone had experience capturing DV footage to an
external drive (Final Cut Express or Pro) using the port on the external
drive and decided to try it this morning. It works for about 5 seconds
before stopping. This might work with a PCMCIA cardbus F/W adapter so the
camera and drive have their own ports but will have to wait until one is
purchased. Of course a new Powerbook with a much larger drive (or replacing
the current 20 gig drive) would also work.
