I purchased my TiBook 800 MHz Aug 2002 a few months later a hinge broke out of the blue - Apple didn't fight me over it and when I took it into the Tampa Apple store to be shipped I mentioned that the paint was starting to flake a bit in spots. The Apple expert noted it and marked it along with the hinge for repair. It was still under the original warranty (I got the extended Apple Care shortly after this incident). When the TiBook came back it had fresh new case parts. It was noticeably different in color around the lighter color silver trim bezel and hinges. Since that incident I haven't had any issue with paint - so I conclude that they did something different. I even have a couple of slight scratches where I forgotten to remove my watch and it scratched the area notorious for the paint flake issue and the paint has not chipped or gotten worse where these scratches are located. My only noticeable cosmetic issue is that the lcd latch button chrome plating is getting a little worn but I can live with that . . . I've seen some parts sales sites online but I'd see if something isn't available from Apple at a reasonable price? My experience is that at least for my TiBook DVI model 15" they got something right in the paint mix?
