Firewire Limits

I have a 17" AlPB and have a number of firewire devices connected. (2 
external drives, an audio interface (M-Audio 410). That worked ok until 
I added a video deck . After 20 mins of recording video, I lost all 
firewire devices. I hard to cold boot to recover. Apple System Profiler 
said that "no firewire information is available". Is there a limit? Do 
I need a powered firewire hub and would that work?
