[Ti] decompressing a file while its on a server - slightly off topic :-)

Can anyone tell me how to go about decompressing a .tgz file while its 
on the server?

This is supposed to help in installing a particular php run setup that 
I want to use.

Decompressing the file on the server is supposed to help in avoiding 
some problems which
might arise by simply dragging the uncompressed folder/files on to the 
server I am working with.


Any insight into this is much appreciated....
