DSL is not necessarily restricted to 1 Mbit...my DSL line is a 4Mbit line
(advertised as 3 Mbit but I am almost on top of the switch) via Bellsouth
and cheaper than cable in this area.  As cable increases their overall
bandwidth, DSL providers will too if not there already.  I find DSL much
better as it is a dedicated line, better upstream bandwidth, no sharing the
capacity with my neighbors, etc.   Cable providers also caches their pages
on several providers to increase speed where as DSL providers do not.  The
only drawback to DSL is that it is not always available in some areas until
they build out a bit.
