John - I just ran the 10.3.8 Combo update, repaired disk permissions
before and after, ran fsck -y.

NOW I get the message, immediately upon start-up:

system extension cannot be used ....blah blah......

	AppleSlewClock.kext

WHAT on earth is this? The name sounds like a joke.

I wonder what can be the process that is causing a message to say
that this or that extension is not installed properly. What does
'properly' mean? I never installed them personally, so if they are
not installed properly, what does that mean?

Do I just re-install 10.3.8 from a SAFE start up ?

When I run Internet Connect, the previous message about
AppleUSBCDCACMdata.kext appears again, twice.

regards, Trevor
