[Ti] Hard drive spin up issue.

I assume this is the problem but when I restart my tibook I'm often  
left with a backlight screen that does nothing. I think it's a hard  
drive spin up issue since when I hold down 't' it seems to coax the  
drive tie spin up and the system boots normallly. But  not without  
this step.

System is running 10.4.

What software allow me to diagnose the drive further?

SMARTReporter hasn't reported anything of interest.
