That's a fairly common failure mode for optical drives; they will read  
one type of disk, but not another.  CD-Rs and DVD-Rs are fairly  
different from (and harder to read than) professionally manufactured  
disks.  Call Apple, and arrange to have the drive replaced when it is  
convenient for you.
