I used to have a Verizon card for my PowerBook that worked well (with
the drivers already in OS X). It provided about double the speed of
dialup connections, however the Verizon coverage didn't fit my travel
patterns.

So I now have a USB link to my cell phone and have wireless internet
service with Alltel. The speed is a little better (usually around
300 Kbps), and it also required no additional software. Alltel's
Axcess MobileLink Broadband service also has spotty coverage
(depending on which network you're on and what their capabilities are
when roaming), but seems to better fit my travel patterns.
