Search on the Apple website to see if there is a PMU (Power Management Unit) on your powerbook, and if so, how to reset it. >From your post I am not sure if your battery is not working or if just the indication (icon) is wrong. If the latter, and if the PMU reset, does not work, try a different battery because yours may be dead.
