If you are a non professional , home user, like me :

I recently purchased an Epson 1260 Photo Scanner ( 1200 X 2400)/slide 
and negative attachment scanning
$120 (with a $30, mail-in  rebate) at CompUSA

Epson has posted   OS X.2 compatible Twain 5 Drivers on its website.
All works OK with my X.2.3 OS

I process the scanned photos ( or text) with either Graphic Converter 
V4.5  or Photo Shop Elements 2

Very happy with results
