set Terminal backgroud/foreground colors programatically?

I can set the colors using the GUI interface e.g. The Terminal preferences,
or with an app such as TelnetLauncher. And I see that there is AppleScript
support.

but is there anything I can run, say from my .login on a remote server, that
will allow me to change the background color of my terminal window so I can
color-code my remote sessions? I can do this with xterm escape sequences and
"ANSI colors" but they are... well... garish in the extreme :)

I'd be happy for something that let me do HTML-safe colors, even, or...
anyway... is such a programmatic interface available?
