Mail and bulk addresses

So I set up a bulk address today in Address Book. It took the form 
First: workshop, Last: committee, Email: a, bunch, of, email, 
addresses. Mail choked on this because it appeared in the To: field as 
"workshop committee <a, bunch, of, email, addresses>. Mail said that 
"addresses>" was malformed. Any suggestions from those more experienced?
