Epson 1660 PHOTO scanner and OS X

Epson says the Perfection 1660 PHOTO scanner requires built-in USB and  
that USB 2.0 is not supported in Mac OS. Does anyone know this to be  
correct or not? I have a beige G3 with a PCI USB card running Jaguar.  
Presently a USB 1.1 card, but may switch to USB 2.0 card (if the  
scanner will utilize the faster speed). Others experiences and insights  
appreciated. Thanks.
