"New" isn't a good way to judge it, because the iMac 17" FP is newer than the iBook (Late 2001) but the iMac 17" FP doesn't have Auto-MDIX ... the iBook (Late 2001) does. Only one has to switch ... connecting an iMac 17" FP (lacking Auto-MDIX) to an iBook (Late 2001), you would not need a crossover cable.
