[X Newbies] firmware upgrade problem

Are you sure you have to upgrade firmware?  I didn't for my G4/400 which is
an earlier version than your's is.  I did recently get an upgrade drive
message from software update, which I clicked upgrade and it did so
automatically.   I would look on the Apple site to see if your particular
model G4 should have a firmware upgrade before installing OSX
