[X Newbies] Long pause at network initialization

Is this on boot?  If so, go into Applications > Utilities > Directory 
Access and disable any of the services that you do not use like NIS, 
LDAPv2 or v3, NetInfo, etc.  That may help speed the network 
initialization process up, since the computer won't be trying to find a 
server/service that doesn't exist.
