Question re First Install of OS X on iMac

I'm going to help a friend install Jaguar on her slot-loading iMac. 
She's never booted into X (whatever version it is) in the time (2 years 
or so) that she's had it. My (perhaps silly) question is this: Can I 
just do the install from the Jaguar disks or do I need to start by 
doing the setup on her already installed version of X? Any other tips I 
should be aware of? Thanks in advance for any help.
