I'd second Joe's recommendation to have copies of David Pogue's book.

At $15 per copy, this seems like it would be a good buy:

Keep yourself, as the designated trouble-shooter, well-armed with 
Randy B. Singer's troubleshooting guide: "How to deal with common 
Macintosh OS 10.2 (Jaguar) problems

Find out the release date for the OS X native version of DiskWarrior 
from Alsoft. Get it. If the current version will boot your machines, 
get it now.

Create a clean, not-to-be-normally-used, administrative user on each machine.

Put a clean, working OS X on a bootable, portable hard drive and keep it handy.
