Lost messages

As a newcomer to Mac OZ X, after 17 years on classic, things are not 
where I am used to find them.

When in 'Mail' I noticed that more and more time was spent 'writing 
changes to disc'.  Without any warning (perhaps that was the warning!) 
I spotted a message that said  something about 'comparing' the messages 
with the index, after which ALL of the contents of my Inbox disappeared.

If I can find them. Where are they?
