[X Newbies] blue screen infinity

Thanks so much for your help.

You know, I'm a reasonably intelligent person, and I can follow
directions rather well, but I've tried restarting the computer in OS 9,
following the instructions in The Missing Manual, and that didn't work.
I followed the instructions using the web and the above-mentioned book
several times to start the computer in 'Safe Mode.' While the computer
acknowledged what I was trying to do with the announcement of 'Safe
Boot', I still got the terminal blue screen when I awaited the desktop
that would allow me to delete the files I need to get rid of. I have
a sincere feeling I know what files are causing the problem that's
resulted in a blinking question mark and a terminal blue screen, but I
can't seem to get anywhere to fix it! Once, I got to the black screen
for Unix communications, but when I tried to access the "System Folder"
directory, I was told there were too many arguments. In addition, I've
detached all my non-Apple components, although I'm sure they're not the
issue, and tried to run the fsck that's the Unix version of Disk
Utility, but that didn't work out.

Although I've read several admonishments not to panic, I can't help but
panic, because I feel like there's something I'm doing wrong, although
I know that I'm following all the directions correctly-- they're not
too difficult! They're just not working, and I'm not getting the
promised screens....

I don't even know what I'm asking at this point....
